Now more than ever the spotlight is being shone on Black fashion designers and deservedly so. They should be celebrated throughout the year but for this year’s Black History Month we wanted to showcase some of our favorite Black designers who have brought a new twist to the fashion industry. From bags to shoes, to clothing and more, these designers create luxury items that are increasingly becoming sold out. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, let this list serve as inspiration for you this year.
- Telfar by Telfar Clemens. This genderless fashion label had its breakout moment the
summer of 2020 when the brand’s bags began selling out in a matter of seconds. People would flood the website hoping to snag Telfar’s popular shopping bag but were often defeated by “bots.” Thankfully, Telfar’s motto is “NOT FOR YOU — FOR
EVERYONE” and in line with that belief, the brand created its Bag Security Program
which ensures that every customer can purchase a bag without fear of missing out. A
Telfar bag is that absolute staple you need in your closet, whether you get the small,
medium or large one.
- Brandon Blackwood by Brandon Blackwood. This brand is most known for its “End
Systemic Racism” tote that shot to popularity with the help of Kim Kardashian’s
Instagram page. What attracts many people to the bag is its powerful message that serves as a reminder for what we are fighting against every single day, systemic racism. Blackwood’s ESR totes, as they’re affectionately called, are rather affordable at $70-$80 a tote and come in many different colorways.
- MELISSA SIMONE by Melissa Simone. This swimwear brand is loved by influencers
and everyday people alike. The swimwear brand offers quality like no other and unique designs you haven’t seen elsewhere. While a bit on the pricey side, the money is well worth it. Melissa Simone swimsuits have been donned by the likes of Kylie Jenner, Bella Hadid and Lori Harvey and all three ladies looked amazing in them.
- Hanifa by Anifa Muvemba. Not only is Hanifa a size-inclusive brand, ranging from
0-20, but it’s pieces are timeless and elegant with features that can be traced back to Muvemba’s Congolese roots. At the moment, Hanifa has three different collections: Pink Label Congo, Essentials and Hanifa Resort. Each collection is unique in its own right and there’s definitely something for everyone in each collection.
These are just a few of the Black designers currently taking the industry by storm, but there are countless others are leaving an impact as well. This Black History Month and every month after, make sure to buy from one of these great designers.
